About The Candidates
David Stibbe - OWN Federal Candidate - 2019
David Stibbe is passionate about Canada, our environment, and his community. As a young adult he spent many years exploring this country — and the world — as an adventurer and travel guide. He returned to Ottawa in 2004.
David, along with his then-future wife Angie, moved to the Britannia neighbourhood of Ottawa West Nepean in 2005 and since then has focused on giving back to his community. Together they have raised two wonderful daughters, Jesse and Jordyn, and they all feel blessed to be able to call Ottawa West Nepean home.
With a Bachelor of Education from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from Carleton University, David is an Ontario Certified Teacher. He has taught various ages, in distinct educational settings, including elementary, middle, and high school, as well as at a post-secondary institution. He’s also worked with adults and seniors. Currently employed at Cedar Ridge High School — a Montessori-inspired independent school — David is a full-time learning support teacher as well as teaching a full slate of geography and environmental based courses. He is also a Duke of Edinburgh Awards program leader.
As an outdoor education professional, David was a contributing member of the team that developed and established the curriculum and teaching guidelines for the Outdoor Adventure Diploma at Algonquin College. It's now Eastern Canada's premier program for creating the next generation of outdoor industry professionals.
David has also designed and led numerous group wilderness programs, established numerous child and youth environmental education programs and participated in several sponsored outdoor adventure expeditions. His very own urban outdoor adventure company, Ottawa City Rafting, is located in Britannia and was established in partnership with Joe Kowalski of Wilderness Tours back in 2014. In 2015, David and Ottawa City Rafting won the Best New Tourism Company in the National Capital Region; an honour awarded by Ottawa Tourism. Ottawa City Rafting is now in its sixth successful year of operating as a sustainable small business supporting nearly 20 seasonal employees, many of whom are university students from neighbouring communities.
David was an early member of the Ottawa Riverkeeper Board of Directors and remains an active supporter to this day. He’s sat on the Board of Whitewater Ontario and currently sits on the board of a small not-for-profit, which advocates for environmental education and programs for youth on the Ottawa River, called Kitchissippi Centre.
To David, the Green Party speaks to the values needed by our country right now. The climate crisis, pollution, and the protection of our natural species — both flora and fauna — are critical issues that must be addressed. As well David believes in common-sense economics and that legislation, not spending, is the process by which we can affect the most change. He is determined to be a voice for small business and the middle-class; in understanding that big business can be a force for good, he knows everyone must pay their fair share to maintain the structures of our public sector and services.
Most important to David is the concept of local knowledge. We must work with our communities to solve local problems with the stakeholders who are impacted the most.
